When DAS NEUE UNIVERSUM was founded in 1992, their fundamental principle was to never to find a description for the kind of the work itself except for the description: electronically generated audiovisual art.
In our view, the moment when you start any artistic project under a certain label and make anything certain or definitions about what to do, you will ultimatively become predictable and the way for anything new is blocked, except one day you find out that you would like to do something else. If you, like said before, defined what you were doing before, you then have to explain that you are doing something else and thus need to expand or even change the concept.
The concept for DAS NEUE UNIVERSUM is based on the fact of an ever-expanding, ever-changing style and/or point of view, so that any definition for what DAS NEUE UNIVERSUM is, except for being a new universe at any time of its existence, redundant. It is also possible that nothing changes, for an unknown amount of time. Nothing is sure, and even that is not sure, and so on.
DAS NEUE UNIVERSUM must not be understood. Understanding things and cathegorizing things is a human behaviour, which comes from central brain functions which are not clearly researched in terms of free choice. Until this is not entirely cleared, it is our decision, to make no decision.
kNORT and aGe2.1 met in 1987, circa at the age of 13. Somehow, this all started like a schoolyard battle about everything. And ofcourse somehow very simliar interests: Classical Music and Computers. aGe2.1 had his first ZX81 by the age of 9 and kNORT started with a C=128D.
In 1988 the first computer compositions by aGe2.1 came up, while kNORT first started making Music when they both switched to Commodores Amiga in 1989.
In 1992 they both decided to turn to more sophisticated solutions in music making and kNORT bought his first synthesizer the Korg DW-8000, an Akai S950 sampler and a Midi-capable Atari ST. aGe2.1 brought an KAWAI XS-1 and a Yamaha EMP100.
It was the hour of birth for "Das Neue Universum".
They started experimenting and researching sound. Which lead to a series of loops, songs and clips, all recorded directly to cassette tape. Among them their first Album, called "Konzentration".
Buckle up, fellow Psychonauts.
